"Deep bewilderment" was expressed in a joint release from the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, and the archbishop of York, John Sentamu as to the marriage of two gay priests which took place in a London church in late May, which was strongly opposed by part of the most traditionalist section of the Church of England. "We cannot comment on the specific circumstances states the release , because they are currently being investigated by the bishop of London" (Richar Chartres). The two leaders of the Anglican Communion recall in the release that, as to the issue of "human sexuality", there are doctrinal and regulatory references that regulate the approach of the Church of England to this issue. References highlight Williams and Sentamu which are "well known and which still apply". "Those of the clergy goes on the release who disapprove of what the Church teaches are free to try to persuade others within the Church of the reasons they like, in the light of the Scriptures, the tradition and the reason, which can always be changed. But they cannot simply neglect them". From June 4th to 8th, the Church of England will gather in a general Synod, and the agenda will include a discussion of the Episcopal ordination of women. Another hot topic, this one, due to the strong opposition of the traditionalists.
