CCEE: SPOKESMEN MEETING; THE CHURCH’S POSITION ON THE MEDIA

Scandals to be managed, declarations on life and for the family, to be promoted in their right dimensions, events to be supported, and above all, the commitment to take care of the image of the Church which lives and operates for the good of society. That is the work of the spokesmen of Bishops’ Conferences. The framework emerged from the exchange of professional experiences taking place this morning in Rome among the press officers of the different European Bishops’ Conferences within the meeting promoted by CCEE. The first one to speak was Brenda Drumm, from the communication office of the Irish Bishops’ Conference. "We have no problems in being present on the front pages of newspapers – she said -, whenever there are scandals involving the Church; but when we have to make known a pastoral work, or something about the daily life of the Church, there is no way to get room in the media". In the Czech Republic, too, the media interest in the Church mostly depends on "controversial" subjects such as "priests leaving office, or decrease in the number of vocations". (to be continued)
