On the day before the World Blood Donor Day, celebrated on 14th June, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe (COE), Terry Davis, paid homage to hundreds of thousands of blood donors, inviting us all to follow their example. "Under many aspects, needs increased with time, and the supply does not follow demand rhythms". "Although medical science made a lot of advances in the prevention and treatment of lots of diseases declared Davis the life or death question still depends on blood availability". "The Council of Europe has been working for a long time to assure us blood quality and availability, and to ensure its optimal use. Our work is based on three principles: self-sufficiency, protection and safety of donors and containers, and preventing trading through voluntary donation". "On the day before the World Blood Donor Day he concluded, I invite everybody to donate blood. When we donate blood, we donate life".
