ALGERIA: TEISSIER (BISHOP OF ALGIERS), "THE FUTURE OF THE COUNTRY IS NOT BUILT ON BLOOD"

"Sadness and sympathy" as well as the belief "that the Algerian people have it in themselves to make their country reborn by starting all over again from national reconciliation". In this spirit, the archbishop of Algiers, mgr. Henri Teissier, comments to SIR the wave of terrorist attacks, which have flooded Algeria. "The Algerian people – states the archbishop – have opted for years for the way of reconciliation. Those who commit these bloody attacks are small groups. Our country has suffered a lot between 1992 and 2000, and now we hoped we could live without violence, but that’s not the case. But one thing must be clear. The future of the nation is not built on slaughters or blood". "It is rumoured that fundamentalists supported by Al Qaeda, which seems to be deeply rooted in Maghreb – he adds –, put the bombs. These massacres have no political relevance. The only strong response now is to keep working for dialogue and reconciliation and give security and stability to people. The Algerians, despite their fear, have the strength to react to violence with the respect of life and rights". (dnr)
