ANNA POLITKOVSKAJA: THE EU PARLIAMENT’S NEWSROOM DEDICATED TO HER, CONSOLI (IPA), "SHE WAS A HERO"

"Anna was a hero": Lorenzo Consoli, a journalist for ApCom in Brussels and president of the International Press Association (Ipa/Api), recalls his colleague Anna Politkovskaja, to whom the EU Parliament dedicated the Brussels’ newsroom. The ceremony, that took place yesterday, was attended by the president of the Assembly Hans-Gert Poettering, many MEPs and dozens of media operators accredited to the EU institutions. Editor in chief of Novaja Gazeta, known for her investigations into the Chechen conflict and the defence of human rights in Russia, Politkovskaja was murdered on October 7th 2006 as she was going back home. "We are proud to be working in a room that will take Anna’s name – explains Consoli – and we are grateful to the EU Parliament for this initiative. We must not forget that Politkovskaja risked her life many a time to tell the horrors of war, to defy the official reality and the plot of the silence of the Russian neo-authoritarian regime". Consoli shows a letter received from the Russian journalist Alexandre Mineev. "I am here, sitting at the desk that was Anna’s", he writes, thanking them on behalf of the Novaja Gazeta. (continued)
