BENEDICT XVI: TO FAO, "COOPERATING TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEBN WEALTH AND POVERTY" (2)

"At this particular time, that sees food security threatened by the rise in the price of farming produce – went on the Pope –, new strategies have to be developed to fight poverty and boost rural development", not least "through structural reforms" that "will help face the challenges of food security and climate change". According to Benedict XVI, in addition, "there’s the need to increase the availability of food, by promoting the industriousness of small farmers and ensuring they have access to the market". However, according to the Pope, "the global rise in farming produce will be effective on condition such produce will be effectively distributed and mostly allocated to fulfil the basic needs". A process, this one, which is "certainly not easy", but which would also make it possible to "rediscover the value of the rural family", as a "model of life, education, culture and religiosity". In addition, economically, such strategy "would ensure effective, loving care for the weaker ones and, because of the principle of subsidiarity, can play a direct role in the distribution and marketing of farming produce for food, reducing the costs of the intermediate stages and promoting small-scale crops".
