(From our correspondents in Sydney) – The Aboriginal Catholic Ministry of Sydney’s Archdiocese expressed its satisfaction for the Pope’s words during Sydney’s welcome ceremony. As a matter of fact, Benedict XVI reminded participants that "Australia’s ancient aboriginal heritage is an essential part of modern Australia’s contemporary cultural landscape" and praised "the concrete steps" that are being made in the country for "reconciliation and mutual respect". "Claiming the rights of the Aboriginal people was the recent comment made to Sir by the above-mentioned Archdiocese office is a reason for great joy for us. The Pope’s words are incredibly important for everyone, especially younger people". "The Catholic Church has stood by the Aboriginal people thanks to her missionaries since the beginning of this country’s history, and the choice to mark the most important events with the gestures and colors of native tradition clearly shows our recognition of the Aboriginal people". "What the Pope has said and what he will say in the future on this subject cannot but favour the respect of Aborigines’ rights and reconciliation in this country".
