WYD IN SYDNEY: MONS. BETORI’S CATECHESIS (ITALY), "THERE IS NO PLACE FOR SELFISH OWNERSHIP"

(From our correspondents in Sydney) – "One single heart and soul; this is what Christian communion is all about, thanks to the one same spirit which makes us one single body": Mons. Giuseppe Bertori reiterated, secretary General of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, during one of Sydney’s WYD catecheses. If we are but one single thing – he added – then things cannot divide us. In Christian communion there is no place for selfish ownership, which deprives our brethren of what they need. Ownership should not be experienced as an element of exclusiveness, but as a means to help our brothers and sisters and make them grow, as a gift." In other words, "it is the joyful urge to pour our riches over our brethren to make them rich. The Bishops’ Conference Secretary then underlined the importance of prayer, which "since it is one of the pillars of our Church, cannot be kept on the sidelines." "Beware – he warned youths – of thinking of yourselves as Christians" just by "proclaiming a few truths", without cherishing the encounter with God. "At the heart of Christianity we find a vital and personal encounter with God" and "only by engaging in this personal encounter, only then we can say we are truly Christian".
