WYD IN SYDNEY: PILGRIMS GIVE WELCOME TO THE CROSS AND THE ICON

(From our correspondents in Sydney)– Flags of all colors were joyfully waving to greet the arrival of the WYD Cross in the Bay of Sydney on a yellow boat, at the end of a 15-day pilgrimage throughout Australia. Japanese, Mexican and European kids, together with many Australians, wrapped up in their flags, were cheering as the Cross and Marian Icon passed by, singing hymns to the Holy Spirit. Australian participants included representatives from the local Caritas and pro-life movement. "The pilgrimage of the Cross to Australia has had a major impact on young people, eliciting their enthusiasm and amazement. We are happy because we need to reawaken our faith here", Mons. Julien Porteous said, auxiliary bishop of Sydney, who took part in the greeting ceremony. The passage of the Cross and Marian icon, carried on shoulders by Australian kids, was hailed by the sounds of guitars and tambourines up to their arrival in the cathedral.
