(From our correspondents in Australia) "Using condoms does not prevent AIDS infection and that’s what experience has shown us": this is what Card. Oscar Rodriguez Martinez had to say during his stay in Melbourne for today’s Caritas Forum on global citizenship. "In my country, Venezuela, – he added condoms have been distributed for free for twenty years and the epidemic has worsened." Card. Mariaga mentioned that the experience made in Uganda turned out to be extremely positive "where the Catholic Church, together with the Community of St. Egidio, launched a sex education campaign that has actually limited the virus spread". The Cardinal explained that a truly "human" sexuality should be lived in a "responsible" way, avoiding promiscuous behaviour: "we are not just pure instinct, we are human beings endowed with reason which we must use". At the end, the Cardinal said that: "The problem today is that we live in a constant schizophrenia amongst the different dimensions in our lives: but there is only one single person in the end, and as Church we believe that man should be considered in his entirety."
