WYD IN SYDNEY: CARD. MARADIAGA: "THE GLOBALIZATION OF POVERTY IS ON THE RISE"

(From our correspondents in Australia) – "Unfortunately the globalization of poverty is growing worldwide": declared Card. Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga, during the Caritas Forum which took place this morning in Melbourne, one of the dioceses which are hosting WYD youths before the Sydney event. According to Card. Maradiaga, the Milennium Goals, which have to be met by 2015, have become unattainable "because, just to make an example, oil and food prices keep rising with dire consequences for many peoples all over the world." Card. Mariaga believes that this increase is not due to choices made by producing countries, but that "a huge responsibility belongs to banks and financial institutions". He also added that "Christians are citizens of this world and they have a duty to speak out and do something to change things". According to Card. Mariaga, young people in particular, who care for human rights but are "totally disgusted" by politics, are called upon to take action since "the corruption they hate so much cannot be eradicated without their active commitment" and "democratic participation is the only way to bring justice and truth to the world".
