WYD IN SYDNEY: BEST WISHES FOR A HAPPY NAME-DAY TO THE POPE FROM THE 50,000 YOUNGSTERS IN MELBOURNE

(from our correspondents in Australia) – The good wishes for a happy name-day from the youngsters gathered in Melbourne in the days preceding WYD in Sydney reached the Pope on the feast of St. Benedict. A choral outburst, "Benedict, Benedict", was long exclaimed by the some 50,000 youngsters present in the Telstra Dome in Melbourne. To their voices was added that of the Archbishop of the city, the Most Rev. Denis Hart, who invited the young "to confide in the Gospel, to follow the Pope and to work for justice, peace and rights. In this gathering – he said – the love for Benedict XVI can be deeply felt". The archbishop’s words were followed by a long burst of applause from the youngsters, who also enthusiastically responded by waving their banners, hats and scarves.
