ZIMBABWE: BISHOPS OF EASTERN AFRICA AGAINST "INHUMAN VIOLENCE". ASKING FOR "DIALOGUE"

A powerful appeal to "put an end to the inhuman violence" in Zimbabwe and an invitation "to dialogue between the two parties", joining their voices with those who "are questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election": this is the position of the bishops of Amecea, the association of the members of the Bishops Conferences of Eastern Africa (Eritrea, Ethiopia, Malawi, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia plus Djibouti e Somalia as affiliate members), in a statement on the situation in Zimbabwe – received today by SIR – during the XVII general assembly held in Lusaka (Zambia) from 27 June to 7 July. The bishops of Amecea join the cry of the bishops of Zimbabwe, who in a release dated 13 June denounced the escalation of "a kingdom of violence" in the country, which "keeps spreading fear and sufferings among thousands of innocent women, men and children". The bishops of Amecea "ask those who are behind this inhuman violence to put an end to all this". "Those who committed such violence – they add – must be consigned to justice to account for their actions". (continued)
