WYD IN SYDNEY: CARD. RYLKO, "MAY THE YOUNG LIVE THESE DAYS DEEPLY"

"Hopefully, the Holy Spirit will open the hearts and the minds of these young people leaving for Sydney". It was said to SIR by Card. Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Papal Council for the Lay, in seeing the hundreds of young people leaving today from Fiumicino airport for Sydney, where they will attend the WYD (15-20 July). "May the Pope’s call of last Sunday – stated the cardinal – drive all the young to deeply live this event that has been prepared for a long time and to which local commitment has been given too". Over these hours, Fiumicino airport is invaded by hundreds of young people who have livened up the Roman airport not only with colours but also with voices and songs. From Puglia to Sicily, from Campania to Lazio, all can be identified by their traditional blue hats with the Sydney logo on them. However, many are flaunting like trophies the hats and gadgets of the previous WYDs, above all Rome and Cologne. The check-in procedures go on relentlessly, the queue is long but orderly, and the young undergo the security procedures patiently, sometimes even singing.
