Hundreds of farmers, fishermen, breeders and activists of environmental groups and other organizations of civil society are meeting in Rome from 1st to 4th June on the occasion of "Terra Preta", a forum in parallel with the conference on food security and global warming set up by FAO to ask governments and FAO to take responsibility for the current food crisis. In 1996, at the World Food Summit, 830 million people in the world were estimated to be miserably fed; governments pledged themselves to cut that figure by a half within 2015. "Today, on the contrary stated the organizations of "Terra Preta" many people foresee that their number will increase by fifty percent, until 1.2 billion, for people are threatened by climate chaos and by the pressure of food combustible production". "Right in the middle of the fall in the reserves of agriproducts and fish stated the Italian Crossroads International Centre -, booming food and petrol prices, we need new policies, habits and structures to solve the current food crisis, and to prevent future and even more serious tragedies. The governments, including South governments, must now acknowledge their responsibilities for carrying out policies endangering the agricultural sector and destroying food sovereignty".
