EU: ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COMMITTEE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF WORK

Debates, cultural events, exhibitions: in Brussels on May 28th, the Economic and Social Committee of the European Union (Cese) will celebrate the anniversary of its first plenary meeting. Established in 1957 with the Treaties that created the EEC, it is an advisory body and an integral part of the EU’s decision-making process. Cese represents employers, trade unions, consumers and other stakeholders of the 27 member states through 344 permanent members. It is chaired by the Greek Dimitris Dimitriadis. On 28th May, a debate will be held on the "role of the future generations in the European project", which will be attended by political leaders, former Cese presidents and young people from the member states. Another debate will be focussed on "the future of Europe and the Year of Intercultural Dialogue", with speeches from the French Jacques Delors, former president of the EU Commission, the Italian writer Erri De Luca, the Irish Pat Cox, former president of the European Parliament. In addition, a book on the history of the Committee will be presented. "Cese – explains a note – acts as a bridge between the EU and its citizens, promoting a more participatory and inclusive model of democratic society". Other celebrations have been planned for the rest of the year.
