"Promoting solidarity between neighbours all over Europe": Fédération Européenne des Solidarités de Proximité (Fesp) promotes on 27th May, in cooperation with the EU Commission, the European Neighbours’ Day or Fête Européenne des Voisins. In the last few years, this initiative has started to spread in a increasing number of countries: dozens of initiatives have been planned for tomorrow; they are listed at www.european-neighbours-day.com: "People living in the same building or neighbourhood explains Atanase Périfan, president of Fesp only have to meet around a buffet to create or strengthen relations between people, for everyone’s wellbeing". Informally started, this year, the Day is supported by the EU. The EU Executive "warmly hails" this initiative, explains the Welfare Commissioner Vladimir Spidla, "which helps gather the neighbours of Europe and live diversity together". Spidla recalls that the EU "provides us with a unique model of cohabitation of different nations, languages, cultures and lifestyles"; "mutual respect and understanding are essential to enrich the values of solidarity, freedom, democracy and peace that we share in Europe".
