EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT: URGENT AIDS TO MYANMAR AND CHINA. A REPORT ON TURKEY

Turkey, Myanmar, China, Lebanon: many items of foreign policy are on the agenda of the next plenary meeting of the European Parliament. The headlines have forced the Assembly, which will gather in Strasbourg from 19 to 22 May, to discuss the "tragic situation in Myanmar following the Nargis typhoon which caused dozens of thousands of casualties, missing and homeless people, and devastated the infrastructure". A discussion should be held about the "urgent humanitarian aids to the affected population", given the "attitude of the military junta". It will be attended by delegates of the EU Commission and EU Council that manage the operating side of such aids. Likewise, the European Parliament will address the problem of China, "following the earthquake that devastated the province of Sechuan, causing for the moment about 50 thousand casualties and dozens of thousand of homeless people". Today the European Commission allocated the first 2 million euros for immediate help. The MEPs will then address the conflict that has re-emerged in Lebanon and a report on accession negotiations with Turkey. (continued)
