RELIGIONS IN EUROPE: MAURO (EU PARLIAMENT), "link the MEDITERRANEan"

"Europe’s institutions are asked to actively support all the models of dialogue and living together. It is a fundamental investment for our future": Mario Mauro, vice president of the European Parliament, gave his account during the debate taking place in Brussels yesterday, about religions and active citizenship in Europe. However, Mauro also addressed his thought over community borders: "At the same time, the Mediterranean should be linked with the rest from the intellectual and cultural point of view, with the aim of promoting an inclusive society, in which everyone may play an active role". Then, Mauro stated that "Europe needs educational policies relying on the integral development of the people, in an intercultural perspective, and with higher social cohesion". In this sense, "policies meant to point out that education must be an effective vehicle for mutual understanding" are necessary. "A complete education – he went on – helps shaping the new generation in relation to social participation, solidarity and critical understanding of reality". In this respect, "real education should teach the young to respect other cultures, and to promote the acknowledgement of the richness of one’s culture and one’s values".
