CHINA-HOLY SEE: FATHER SALVINI (CIV.CATTOLICA), "SMALL BUT VERY MEANINGFUL GESTURES"

” ” ” “Between China and the Holy See there may be "mutual recognitions in the appointments of the bishops, even if not for all of them", while "some small gestures" like the concert hosted by the Chinese Government in the Vatican a few days ago have "a powerful political and symbolic meaning". Father Gianpaolo Salvini, director of the Jesuit magazine "Civiltà Cattolica", is optimistic about the future of the Catholic presence in China. He speaks about it in an interview on the next issue of Sir Europa. "I hope the Chinese authorities will realise that the Catholic Church does not mean to interfere at all with China’s domestic affairs – he states –, it only wants to retain its key structures. I have a feeling there have been for some times some informal talks and solutions that have in fact been already completed, ‘Chinese style’ – but one might also say ‘Italian style’ – that is, things are there but must not be talked about, otherwise they would cause problems. That is, mutual recognitions in the appointments of the bishops, even if not for all of them. There are some changes of mind sometimes that suggest steps backw, due sometimes to China’s domestic problems". In addition to official talks, father Salvini mentions "the small but meaningful gestures", such as the concert in the Vatican, inspired “by art, culture, very fit for the work of the Church and this Pope. I hope the diplomacy of music is more suitable and telling".
