CHINA-EUROPE: FATHER SALVINI (CIV.CATTOLICA), "DIALOGUE AND COOPERATION ARE NEEDED"

” “An exchange "of dialogue and mutual enrichment", "not just inspired by a commercial approach or by competition", is needed between China and Europe. This was said – in an interview that will be published on the next issue of Sir Europa – by father Gianpaolo Salvini, director of the Jesuit magazine "Civiltà Cattolica". About this subject, "China and Europe: indifference, exchange or dialogue?", father Salvini will hold a lecture for the International "Matteo Ricci" (1552-1610) award at the Catholic University of Milan on May 20th. Europe’s attitude to China, he explains, "is ambiguous. On one side, there’s great interest, the wish to do good business and not miss the opportunity". On the other side, "there’s great fear, given sometimes the ‘dumping’ policies applied by the Chinese". Unlike in the past, though, there’s now a "more constructive attitude in the attempt to avoid this abuse, as well as to find some mutual cooperation". Father Salvini points out that, in these days of emergency for the earthquake in Sichuan, China, "unlike Myanmar, did not turn down foreign help". "If, in times of pain and tragedy, one joins forces and accepts help given in the best possible way, it’s always an opportunity for world fraternity and solidarity which can bring peoples together".
