EUROPEAN UNION: CARD. ERDO (HUNGARY), "AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CENTRAL-EASTERN PEOPLES"

"The European Union as such, despite any discussion about its values, which are important discussions not so much for us as for Europe, is a possibility, an opportunity for the Central European peoples for a reconciliation, for a more than peaceful cohabitation, a factual cooperation. In this sense, the Catholic Church certainly has a possibility and a special ministry: to serve reconciliation and strengthen fraternity between peoples". This was stated by card. Péter Erdö, archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, president of the Hungarian Bishops Conference and president of the Council of European Bishops Conferences, in Rome until Saturday for his visit "ad Limina". In an interview on the Vatican radio station, the cardinal recalled the deed of reconciliation with Slovakia in 2006, the "regular and good relations" with the bishops of Croatia, Austria, Poland, and "now we are starting to look for a regular, institutional form of dialogue" with the bishops of Romania too. "I think – said the cardinal – that, in the context of the European Union, the Church can give a substantial contribution to purging the memory and spreading a culture of love".
