HOLLAND: ANTI-ISLAM FILM ON THE WEB. COUNCIL OF THE CHURCHES, "A DEPLORABLE CARICATURE"

"A deplorable caricature of Islam". This is how the Dutch Council of the Churches defines the film "Fitna" by the extreme right party leader Geert Wilders, launched on the Internet. It is a sort of "collage" of pictures, including some from September 11, the attack on the Madrid station in 2004 and the terrorist attacks of London in 2005. "The feeling aroused by the film is univocal and a provocation", comments Klaas van der Kamp, secretary general of the Council of the Churches in a release published today. "The Dutch Churches – states the release – think society should not be ruled by fear. If there are problems between the different groups that compose it, they must be solved through mutual dialogue, and that alone. Therefore, the Council asks for mutual respect, not a caricature of Islam". The release states that, "through the images of terrorist attacks to be associated with extremist elements within Islam, Wilders sends an unilateral image of this religion. The Churches acknowledge the horrors of violence and obviously abhor any form of terrorism". (continued)
