ISLAM: REPORT OF THE WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM; MGR. PAGLIA, "NEVER BE INSPIRED BY FEAR"

The majority of the world population believe that the violent conflict between the West and the Islamic world can be avoided but is pessimistic about the current relations between the two worlds and feel that the Muslim presence in the West is more of a threat than a benefit. This was generally shown by the Report presented a few days ago in London by the World Economic Forum, called "Islam and the West: yearly report on the state of dialogue". The survey – conducted in conjunction with Georgetown University, Washington – is based on polls that were conducted in 2007 in about twenty countries across the world, from Indonesia to the United States. In Europe, the survey was conducted in Spain, Italy, Denmark, Holland, Belgium and Sweden. As to Europe, "60 per cent of the European population – reads the Report – believe the interaction between the Islamic and the Western worlds is more of a threat than a benefit, and this seems to reflect the anti-immigration feeling that has become so widespread within the European Union". The statistics: the Muslim presence in Europe is perceived as a threat by 79% of Danes, 67% of Italians and Dutchmen, 68% of Spanish and 59% of Belgians.
