BENEDICT XVI: AUDIENCE, "LET’S LET OURSELVES BE CONQUERED BY THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST"(2)

Then, the conclusion of the audience, off the cuff again: "Jesus walks with us and explains us the Scriptures and makes us understand this mystery, and, like He did with the disciples of Emmaus, He should make our hearts burn, so that our eyes may open up". Therefore, the one who walks with the disciples of Emmaus is "the Lord who is with us, who shows us the true way. Just like He reveals Himself to the disciples of Emmaus in breaking the bread, likewise even today, in the breaking of the bread, in the Eucharistic banquet, He shows us His presence". The "breaking of the bread", added the Pope, "reminds us of the first Eucharist in the context of the Last Supper, where Jesus breaks the bread and thus foreshadows His death and resurrection, and He gave Himself to His disciples". "Jesus gives Himself to us, and opens our eyes: in the Eucharist, we can recognise Him", concluded the Pope, who, in another passage of his catechesis, had said, also off the cuff: "The Lord is with us, with His Church, until the end of time".
