BENEDICT XVI: AUDIENCE, "LET’S LET OURSELVES BE CONQUERED BY THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST"

"Let’s let ourselves be conquered by the Resurrection of Christ". With this exhortation, the Pope ended the catechesis for today’s general audience, focussed on the meaning of Easter. "All the liturgy of the Easter time celebrates the certainty and the joy of the Resurrection of Christ", highlighted Benedict XVI, who lingered on the evangelical passage of the disciples of Emmaus, especially the gesture of the "breaking of the bread", from which the disciples recognised Jesus. "The teaching of Christ, the explanation of the prophecies, was for the disciples of Emmaus a sort of unexpected, bright and reassuring revelation". "A new interpretation of the Bible – added the Pope, off the cuff – where everything looks clear, aimed at this moment". "The two disciples – commented the Pope – recognised Jesus from the breaking of the bread, and just at that time He disappeared from their eyes. The reference to the Eucharistic banquet, the live memory of the sacrifice of Christ, the celebration of Easter, is clear". "We too, like the two disciples of Emmaus – recalled the Pope – can meet and recognise Jesus Christ in the celebration of the Eucharist. Every Sunday, the community thus relives the Easter of the Lord and takes from the Saviour His testament of love and fraternal service". (continued)
