EU SUMMIT: BARROSO (EU COMMISSION), "EUROPE HAS PASSED THE REALITY CHECK"

"The European Union has passed the reality check" José Manuel Barroso comments the results of the spring summit and notices that "it shows it knows how to join forces and address the big issues that we have in front of us, without diminishing the ambitions we expressed in the past" about climate, energy, the Lisbon Strategy, "and despite the overall picture having changed". He mostly refers to the economic trend and the recession risk. "The Central Bank responded to the market instability with some cash injections" and the euro, as a strong currency, "has played its part". As to energy "we will complete the file by June", while, to find common responses to the new requirements of the financial markets, the EU Council took time "within the French Presidency", i.e. before the end of 2008. As to the "strengthening of the Barcelona process and the creation of the Mediterranean Union, the EU Commission – adds Barroso – has been called to submit a project to the Paris summit in July. We will play our part". On the same subject, the High Representative for Foreign Policy, Javier Solana, takes position and says: "The EU confirms it is interested in the fate of the other shore of the Mediterranean Sea".
