"In such spheres as marriage, family and life, the current European Parliament should not take position all the time, thus putting pressure on the EU’s countries, that are so different from each other in terms of people’s sensitivity and culture". It was said last night in the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Scolastica, in Subiaco (Rome), by card. Angelo Scola, patriarch of Venice, in a speech on "Christianity, a resource for the future of Europe" at the "Colloqui sublacensi", promoted by the Ordinary Abbot of Subiaco, father Mauro Meacci. "On such delicate matters claimed the patriarch , the principle of subsidiarity means respecting the prevalent traditions of each people, not to put stress on societies that can be very different from each other. And this respect of the anthropological and social pluralities strengthens the unity of Europe". Subsidiarity, then, as one of the guiding ideas "in the building of a Europe as an intercultural project, which finds in Christian life a permanent source not only of inspiration but of historical accomplishment". "Only the principle of subsidiarity explained the cardinal can guarantee the different cultural, personal and communal persons called to interact in the building of an intercultural European society".
