The Spanish Family Forum (FEF) asked the new government to respect the family. Benigno Blanco, president of FEF, did not hide his "preoccupation" for Zapatero’s victory. "The promises made during the electoral campaign, and the proposals in the socialist electoral programme, don’t let us hope for an easy period. On the other hand, we fear another four years of policies of the same kind, that is, against the family”, stated Blanco. He recalled the document submitted by the Spanish Family Forum to the candidates of the political parties, a few days before the elections, in which, 50 measures to support the family were proposed, including the revision of the current divorce law to encourage spouse reconciliation; more favourable tax policy for the family; a social welfare policy for pregnant women, to avoid abortion as the "only way out"; and the encouragement to combine work with family life. One of the more worrisome points for the Spanish Family Forum, according to Blanco, is Zapatero’s position with respect to school. Blanco asked the premier for a "peacemaking gesture" with respect to the subject "Education to citizenship", by eliminating its compulsoriness. Blanco stated that the FEF would go on supporting the movement objecting to that subject. "We shall always defend freedom of education, marriage and life, whoever may govern", he concluded.
