VICTIMS OF TERRORISM: EUROPEAN DAY, "FIGHTING VIOLENCE WHILE OBEYING THE LAW"

A minute of silence at Parliament in Strasbourg to commemorate the victims of terrorism. During today’s meeting, the president of the EU Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, on the occasion of the Fourth European Day for the Victims of Terrorism, expressed "the condolence and solidarity" of the Assembly to "all the families that have been affected by the craziness of terrorism". "Terrorism has no excuses – explained Poettering –, and Europe must join forces to fight it, while obeying the law". The special Day of March 11th had been established after the 2004 Madrid attacks (where 191 people died) and the July 2005 London attacks. In particular, the Assembly mentioned the recent terrorist attack by ETA in Spain where the former Socialist municipal councillor Isaías Carrasco was killed. Similar events have been held in the other EU institutions as well.
