SPAIN: ADOC, NO TO LISTS OF DOCTORS AGAINST ABORTION

"In Spain abortion is still a crime". It was recalled in a release by the National Association for the defence of the right to conscientious objection of biomedical professionals (Andoc), defending "the right of the doctors to object", thinking that "the possibility to draw up lists of objectors would be a threat against freedom". Andoc issued a release to comment on the news published by the media about the possible regulation of the right to conscientious objection for doctors: "The electoral proposal of Psoe – states the association – for the drawing up of lists of doctors who are against abortion can be a serious risk for the freedom of the health professionals". According to Andoc, "transforming the law into a right" is against "the constitutional regulations on the right to life" and would suppose "the legal good of human life to be protected only after a specific moment of its development", thus moving away from the constitutional construction, which "admits decriminalisation only in very extreme cases or in case of need". Therefore Andoc thinks it would be dangerous to create lists of objectors in which "the ethical or religious beliefs of the professionals" would be reflected, so as to segregate objectors.
