COMECE: MGR.VAN LUYN, THE CONTRIBUTION OF FAITH TO THE EU TO "GET OUT OF THE CRISIS" (3)” “” ” ” “

” ” Repeating that in Europe material growth has gone hand in hand with "the loss of meaning", which "moves at a pace with the difficulty of giving a name to evil", the president of Comece stated: The possibility to find the key to overcome the crisis in the rebirth of the religious feelings", of which "many signs are a proof", "cannot be ruled out". On such horizon, "politics in Europe and in particular the European institutions" are called "to respect the human being, in its religious and spiritual dimensions, as well as to acknowledge the importance" of such dimension. European politics will have to be "the politics for the human being in its entirety, whose extraordinary dignity mostly lies in its ability" to "open up to a higher dimension". Hence the request to "listen to and support" the contribution given by religion and faith, for which "the dialogue covered by the Lisbon Treaty between the EU and the religious communities is an encouraging sign". According to mgr. Van Luyn, this is about "acknowledging the religious heritage of Europe", highlighting "its strictly-Christian part, without however discriminating against the other religions". Before the rebirth of the religious in Europe, "the greatest challenge for the Church then lies in communicating" that, "in religion, freedom finds its fullness only in the choice of commitment", because, in political and social life, rights and duties on one side, and freedoms and responsibilities on the other side, are indissolubly linked".
