COMECE: MGR.VAN LUYN, THE CONTRIBUTION OF FAITH TO THE EU TO "GET OUT OF THE CRISIS" (2)

According to mgr. Van Luyn, however, the real problem is not to know "how" the EU works, but rather "why" and "for what". Recalling the "expert team" created by the European Council last December in order to draw up, before Spring 2010, "a report about the essence and the mission of the EU for the decade 2020-2030", the president of Comece commented that such issue "is inherently meta-political", i.e. related "to the foundation of the values of political action itself". Then looking into the policy that has been implemented against the terrorist threat or the risks of climate change, mgr. Van Luyn defined it as "fair and responsible" but, he warned, "a policy that just settles for reacting is against the European spirit, while the steady growth in material wealth", which "only small groups benefit from, cannot in the long run be the only goal of European politics". In the theme of the plenary meeting, according to the prelate, is the "answer to the question on the purpose of the EU in the XXI century"; a "short formula for the common good of Europe" which "can only be accomplished through the pursuit of justice and through the attendant application of the principles of solidarity and subsidiarity".
