"Your convention is drawing attention to the figure of Galileo Galilei. He was considered by many to be among the fathers of modern science and to have transformed the nature of knowledge, the so-called scientific revolution, establishing reason on new bases and perceiving it as a mathematical way of thinking," said today in Rome Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone outlining the works of the convention on "science 400 years after Galileo Galilei," promoted by Finmeccanica. The Cardinal recalled that the "UN General Assembly proclaimed 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy to celebrate 400 years (1609) after the first astronomical use of the telescope by Galileo Galilei." He then said that "with Galilei the science of nature is no longer a piece of work to be contemplated, as it has been conceived for centuries, but to be carefully decoded. As I said, reason is established on mathematical bases so that the real world of everyday experience is replaced by an abstract and geometric world. As you know, it is a knowledge that is founded on experimental truth and comes into contrast with the conception of truth based on the traditional knowledge." (continued)
