(Patrizia Caiffa, SIR’s correspondent from Liverpool) An invitation, that "the governments and the ecclesial communities may find new solutions, not simplistic ones, capable of promoting the different cultural traditions and the wealth that human mobility carries along": it was made today by card. Josip Bozanic, archbishop of Zagreb and deputy president of Ccee (Council of European Bishops Conferences), as he opened the workshop on "Migration, a new space for evangelisation and solidarity", organised with the aid of Secam (Symposium of the Bishops Conferences of Africa and Madagascar) in Liverpool, from November 19th to 23rd. About thirty participants, including European and African bishops and delegates of Vatican ministries and Catholic humanitarian agencies. The Liverpool workshop is held one year after that of Elmina (Cape Coast), Ghana, about the new forms of slavery, as part of the four-year cooperation plan that was decided in 2004 by the European and African bishops. Liverpool is particularly relevant because it was one of the greatest slave markets, and thousands of emigrants left from there for the United States.
