Bishop Jonah of Forth Worth has been elected Archbishop of Washington and New York and Metropolitan of All America and Canada today. He was elected by the 15th All-American Council of the Orthodox Church in America. The new metropolitan was born James Paffhausen in 1959 in Chicago. He was baptised into the Episcopal Church (the name given to the Anglican Church in the United States) and was received into the Orthodox Church in 1978 in the "Notre-Dame de Kazan" parish of San Diego (of the Moscow Patriarchate), in the city where he had attended university. Then, he pursued his studies at St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Institute (in the US) graduating with a Master of Theology in Dogmatics in 1988. In 1994, he was ordained a deacon and then a priest receiving the name Jonah in 1995. A few years later, he founded a monastery in California. On September 4, 2008, he was elected Bishop of Worth and Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of the South by American Orthodox Bishops.
