"Rights and freedom are essential to steer clear of any totalitarian repercussion that is not respectful of man. Rights, however, that must be based on a high sense of dignity and justice. Protecting man’s dignity does not mean only not killing, not maiming, not torturing him. It also means giving hunger and thirst for justice and freedom that is in him a chance to be sated". These are the words that mgr. Jean-Louis Bruguès, secretary of the Congregation for Catholic Education, spoke in Nuremberg, on November 6th, during the IV CoE Workshop of the Ministers of Education of the countries that signed the European Cultural Convention (Nuremberg-Dachau, 5-7 November 2008). Mgr. Bruguès’ speech was relayed today by the Newsroom of the Holy See. "We would risk falling back into barbarism added the prelate if we did not have a passion for justice and freedom and if we did not strive to prevent evil winning over good, as it happened with millions of children of the Jewish people". "Efforts must be doubled up to release man from the ghosts of racism, exclusion, marginalisation, slavery, xenophobia; to eradicate even the roots of these evils, that sneak into today’s society and undermine the foundations of a peaceful human cohabitation".
