"We need a new deal, a new understanding, for a new world"; "I sincerely hope that, under the leadership of President Obama, the United States of America will join forces with Europe for this new deal. For the good of our societies, for the good of the whole world". José Manuel Barroso, president of the EU Commission, has been EU’s first voice to congratulate the winner of the US elections. "I want to reassure senator Obama added the head of the EU Executive about the support of the European Commission and my own to face together the many challenges that await us. We must turn the current crisis into a new opportunity". The president of the European Parliament too, Hans-Gert Poettering, mentions this difficult time and the great challenges that await Obama’s USA, and states that "the result confirmed, once again, the ability to recover, which has often come to the fore in the difficult times of the American history". In addition, Poettering invites Obama to go to the EU Parliament, if possible during his planned visit to Europe in April 2009 for the Nato summit.
