Saying that, I am all for rethinking the financial market system, and this crisis is offering us an opportunity to do just that". Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France and of the European Council, speaks at the European Parliament to report about the results of last week’s summit. He dealt with four points: the war in the Caucasus, the financial crisis, the climate-energy package and the EU’s immigration policy. Sarkozy insists on the need for "more coordination across the EU" to "have more weight on the world and protect the citizens". He takes credit for the results of his presidency, mostly hanging around "a unity of intentions". "The EU will make progress only if Parliament, Commission and Council work on one accord" and "are able to involve the citizens". As to the climate package, he states: "This is a rendez-vous with history", we must go on with the set objectives (decreases in greenhouse gas emissions, more sustainable energies and more energy efficiency) and with the set schedule. Postponing means failing".
