Today, a new appeal from the Indian Bishops along with the Bishops of Orissa is asking to stop the violence against Christians and open legal inquiries into the events that have been going on for about two months. The Indian Bishops say they are "regretful" at realising that, "after 54 days of attacks against Christians in Kandhamal, the situation in the district and in other parts of Orissa is still tense and unsafe". "Christians are afraid of going back to their villages, because death threats have forced many of them to escape to the forest or live in inhuman conditions in state-run refugees camps denounce the Bishops . The camps are one half of what they used to be, not because some people have gone back to their villages but because they have migrated to other districts and other states in search of security". The Christians of Kandhamal, they point out, "have lost confidence in the state government and think their fundamental right to live has been completely breached by the constitutionally-elected government". The bishops condemn again the murder of Swami Saraswati Laxmananda (which originated the violence of the Hindu fundamentalists against the Christians even if a group of Maoists claimed responsibility for it, editor’s note) and the killing of over 60 Christians.
