"Scientists are not always aiming at people’s well-being in their research." This is what Pope Benedict XVI pointed out during the audience he granted today to people attending the meeting "Faith in reason" which will be held from today until 18th at the Lateran University in Rome. According to the Pope, "the easy earnings, or worst, the presumptuousness of taking the Creator’s place are sometimes determinant factors. This transgression of reason can become dangerous for mankind itself." Science cannot draw up ethic principles. It can only accept them and acknowledge they are necessary for eradicating its pathologies." Against this backdrop, philosophy and theology represent "an essential source of help and should be taken into consideration to prevent science from walking alone on a dangerous and risky path, not free from contingencies." This does not mean to "limit scientific research, nor to hinder technology from producing development devices," explained the Pontiff.
