EU PARLIAMENT: THE RESOLUTION ON HEALTH AS "PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SOCIAL WELL-BEING" HAS BEEN APPROVED

Health "is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, which does not mean the simple absence of diseases or infirmities": the definition is taken from the resolution adopted by the European parliament during the Brussels session (554 in favour, 23 against, 21 abtensions). Such resolution was drawn up by a Slovenian MEP from the People’s Party, Alojz Peterle. Several themes were tackled, such as disease prevention, the promotion of "sound lifestyles", the development of sustainable health systems, and particular care for the disabled. The report includes positive aspects as well as controversial aspects. For instance, in the chapter on prevention, it is said that "the desire to prevent diseases must not lead to a social atmosphere preventing the birth of children with chronic diseases or disabilities". Furthermore, the text points out that it is forbidden to consider the human body a profit source: "this principle should be a guide in the field of health", above all, in relation to donations, grafting of cells and tissues, and transplants of organs. However, the report also says that it is necessary "to increase the sensitiveness of the people in relation to sexual and reproduction health", "in order to prevent undesirable pregnancies" as well as sexually transmitted diseases".
