A "strong rise" in the number of abortions as a consequence of the enforcement of a law that permits women to have an abortion up to four months of pregnancy. This has been established by the Independent Expert Committee, related to the "Right to live" (Dav) platform, which has been set up in Spain to fight abortion and defend the right to live. "Under the current law, enforced in 1985 points out Dav , Spain is already the EU country with the highest rise in the number of abortions: 59% more, from 2000 to 2006", according to the official statistics published by the Family Policy Institute in its survey called "Evolution of the family in Spain 2007". 101,592 abortions were practised in Spain in 2006, 99.2% more than in 1996. Since the enforcement of the current 1985 abortion law, 1.1 million abortions have been practised in Spain. These figures, states 1,1 Luis Chiva, specialist in gynaecology and member of the Dav Commission, "should drive the Government to reflect on the consequences of further extending the terms of the abortion law. Experience shows that it will only cause more children to die and more women to suffer in our country. There’s a direct and proven relationship between free abortion and the number of abortions. More leniency means higher numbers".
