"At the end of the Sermon on the Mountain, the Lord tells us about the two options for building the house of one’s life: on the sand or on the rock. Those who build on the sand are those who only build on visible and tangible things, on success, on career, on money. These seem to be the true realities. But all this will go away one day. We can see that now, in the collapse of the big banks: this money disappears, it’s nothing. And so all these things, which look like the true realities on which to rely on are second-rate realities". This was stated by Benedict XVI in the meditation he held this morning in the Synod Hall, to mark the opening of the XII Ordinary General Assembly of the Episcopal Synod. "Those who build their lives on material things, on success, on all that is appearance said the Pope build on sand. Only God’s Word is the foundation of all reality, it is steady, as steady as the sky and more than the sky, it is reality. So we have to change our concept of realism.
