CCEE: MGR. CABREJOS VIDARTE (CELAM), "COOPERATION WITH EUROPE IS IMPORTANT"

(From our correspondent SirEuropa in Esztergom – Hungary) – "We at Celam consider cooperation with the European bishops most important, since in many cases we face challenges where such solidarity can be particularly important". This was said by mgr. Hector Miguel Cabrejos Vidarte, archbishop of Trujllo, president of the Peruvian Bishops Conference and president of the Mission and Spirituality Department at Celam (Latin American and Caribbean Bishops Conference), as he spoke this morning at the plenary meeting of Ccee in Esztergom (Hungary). "Over the years – said the prelate –, we have been blessed with the presence of many European missionaries" and "we think the time has come to reciprocate this generosity", by showing the best asset of the Latin American people, "faith". According to the archbishop, "our societies, especially the wealthier ones, tend to live withdrawn onto themselves, in an attitude that is individualistic and indifferent" to what is needed, apart from themselves. This is "an increasing trend" which must be responded with "a globalisation of solidarity". Mgr. Cabrejos Vidarte explained to the European bishops some of the problems that trouble the Latin American and Caribbean countries, first and foremost "drugs export and corruption". (continued)
