LANGUAGE DAY: EU "STATES-GENERAL" AT PARIS SORBONNE

About one thousand participants, coming from all over Europe, are taking part in the States-General of multilingualism, promoted by the European Union at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Several events have been planned for the today’s European Day of Languages in several member States, but the initiatives which Commissioner Leonard Orban defined "central" are the ones scheduled in the French capital. Apart from the States-General, in the evening, there will actually be Feast of Languages "celebrating the liveliness and the richness of this heritage in the streets, at Paris monuments, and cultural institutes and centres. Discovering, listening to, reading and learning languages: numerous resources will be mobilized to involve the audience in this celebration". Orban was entrusted with the task of introducing works at the Sorbonne to present the measures which the European Union adopts or intends to take in this field. In particular, Orban explained that "the measures to improve the language expertise of citizens, in the school sector as well as throughout their lives, in order to increase the value of multilingualism in relation to development, progress and cohesion of European societies" are the core of the interest of the States-General.
