KENYA: UNO, ALMOST 10% OF THE POPULATION RISKS HUNGER IN THE NEXT SIX MONTHS

In Kenya, almost 10% of the population is risking hunger in the next six months, because of the increase in food prices. It has been stated in a report by the Kenya Food Security Steering Group (KFSSG), gathering government representatives, UNO agencies, local and international non-profit organizations. According to the document, made known by the UNO Office coordinating humanitarian affairs, "From 3.5 to 4.1 million people living in shantytowns won’t have enough food, with respect to 3 million in 2007", while it is estimated that "without external support, 1 million and 380 thousand people in rural areas won’t be able to get the necessary minimum. Not even that". This figure – it is written in the report – "includes also 300 thousand refugees caused by post electoral violence at the beginning of the year. Though they either came back or are going to be moved from the fields, they still need assistance". "In particular, there are critical levels of malnutrition of children in the areas of Mandera and Turkana", stated Gabrielle Menenzes, from the World Food Programme. Hence, the government, the UNO agencies and the international non-profit organizations are jointly committed to coordinating an intervention plan to be urgently carried out.
