BENEDICT XVI: TO BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA, TREASURING THE "PAINFUL LESSONS" OF THE PAST

Treasuring the "painful lessons learnt from its recent past" to find "the courage" of "building a future with a healthy sense of solidarity". This is the challenge launched by Pope Benedict XVI to Bosnia Herzegovina. In receiving the credentials of the new ambassador of Bosnia Herzegovina, Jasna Krivošiæ-Prpiæ, in the apostolic palace of Castel Gandolfo, this morning, the Pope celebrated the natural beauty of the country and the wealth of the "cultures" that live together in the region and also mentioned that these "cultural and ethnic differences" have been the "cause of misunderstandings and tensions" that have then engendered "conflicts and wars". "So many families in your country – said the Holy Father – have been affected by the sufferings caused by such calamities". However, the Pope wanted to voice "the hope that we all wish for ourselves and for the next generations". And in this respect he made an appeal to the international community: "I wish – he said – to acknowledge the progress that has been made to strengthen the gestures of reconciliation and encourage the international community to continue its efforts to assist per Bosnia Herzegovina in this".
