ECONOMY: EU MINISTERS IN NICE TO RESPOND TO THE RISK OF RECESSION

Finding common responses to the slowdown of growth: this is the focus of attention for the Finance Ministers of the EU who will meet in Nice today and tomorrow. After the publication of the economic figures by the EU Commission, the informal Ecofin meeting will be therefore "focussed on the attempt to strengthen the financial stability of the Union, a priority that is more relevant than ever to bring confidence back in such economic slump". Ministers, central bank governors, the EU Commission and the European Central Bank "will review – states a note from the current presidency of the EU – the recent developments of the financial markets and the appropriate responses to the current scenario". The Ecofin meeting follows the meeting of the Euro-group, i.e. the meeting of the 15 countries that use the single currency. The last work session will be actually focussed on "an analysis of the macroeconomic situation of the European Union and the collective response that must be given. The goal is to go on with a diagnosis and find appropriate macroeconomic and structural responses, so as to respond as effectively as possible to the economic slowdown that Europe is experiencing.
