EU: "AFRICAN WEEK" AT BRUSSELS PARLIAMENT

In Brussels today, the screening of the film "Keita, l’héritage du griot" by the Burkina Faso-born director Dani Kouyaté and a debate on "tradition and modernity" will open the "African week", promoted by the EU Parliament in cooperation with the African Union. Until September 12th, the buildings of the EU Assembly will stage exhibitions, viewings and conferences about development, art, political relations between the two continents. The event is part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue and has attracted ministers, EU Commissioners, NGO staff and executives, artists and academicians. Several cultural events will be held tomorrow, with artists from different African countries; on Wednesday 10th, the Parliamentary Commission for Development will hold a special meeting about "Access to food, one billion euros for food relief", with such guests as Ngozi Okonjo-Iwea of the World Bank and Jacques Diouf on behalf of Fao. In the evening, the municipality of Ixelles, where Parliament is based, a district of Brussels with the highest number of African residents, will host concerts by many artists, including Bonga (Angola) and Bai Kamara Jr (Sierra Leone). A conference will be held on Thursday 11th on the protection of human rights.
